Woodlands of Bedford: Butterfly Hike

6/18/2017

Overview:
This is a late spring walk through riparian woodland and open field habitat in search of butterflies.  Along the way, we will note associated host plants and other items of nature’s beauty.

We had a great summer outing, looking at both the Hemlock Creek lowlands as well as the uplands of Button Road Field.  We noted the following species.
  • Cabbage Butterfly - 75
  • Banded Hairstreak - 1
  • Eastern Tailed Blue – 1 (less than certain id)
  • Summer Azure – 2
  • Great Spangled Fritillary – 10
  • Meadow Fritillary – 12
  • Silvery Checkerspot – 8
  • Mourning Cloak – 1
  • Red Admiral – 2
  • Northern Pearly Eye – 1
  • Little Wood Satyr – 15
  • Least Skipper – 1
  • European Skipper – 20
  • Skipper sp - 3
The only disappointment was the fact that Spicebush, Lindera benzoin, appeared diseased and has suffered loss of leaves and many dead branches.

Thanks to everyone for an excellent outing!
